Representatives from the Arab American National Museum (AANM - http://www.arabamericanmuseum.org/) will be at HVICC this Friday, March 25 at 7:pm to do a presentation about The Sheikh Ahmed Ibrahim El Jamal exhibition.  As many of you know, Sheik Ahmed was the first member of the El Jamal family from Jimzo, Palestine to immigrate to the US in 1950 ,and later sponsored/helped/financed many of his siblings who many of you now count as your friends and family to also come to the US.  There are over 500 members of this El Jamal family in the US, with most in NY.  Sheik Ahmed loved and frequently visited HVICC, and his Janazah was held here just over a year ago and he is buried at nearby Rose Hill Cemetery (may Allah's Mercy be upon him and may He have him in the best place) .

Sheik Ahmed"s wife ("El Hajje Aisha") and his grand and great grand children number over 60, and counting, Alhamdullah. To the El Jamal family, he was "the Sheik," the patriarch of the extended family, who had the best memory of the old country, its ways and its stories. He wrote brilliant poetry; mapped out the entire Jimzo El Jamal family tree; and even mapped out Jimzo, it's trees, wells, roads and homes of all of its inhabitants, including non-El Jamal's and non-Muslims !  Though formally uneducated, he would stay up late at night figuring out complex calculus problems as a hobby; his stories were vivid as if he saw them as he was telling them; and obviously, he can tell you how everyone was related or what town they came from in Palestine just from their middle and last names !  His knowledge was truly expansive... and AANM recognized this long ago and preserved this American dream immigrant story through an exhibition: he is sitting on a reproduced Brooklyn, NY brownstone stoop on Dean St., where he first lived where coming to the US.  It also has many artifacts that he brought with him from Jimzo and Palestine, memorializing his heritage and life.

HVICC hopes you can join us for this wonderful presentation and conversation about this brilliant man many of us simply called "Yaba, Amo, Khalo, Sido, Sheik and Akhee."
